2/25/09 - The Championship Season
It's that time of year again. Time to step it up and compete at the highest level of competition. Through a rigorous set of qualifying races, Sugar Bowl has placed several racers into elite competitions. Representing Sugar Bowl and the Far West, Jake Scannell, Maclean Brady, Jacqueline Lebel and Katie Fitzpatrick all qualified for the prestigious J2 Nationals to be held on March 6-13th in Aspen, Colorado.
Also a very strong set of Sugar Bowl athletes will make their way to Schweitzer, Idaho for the Western Region Junior Championships. That team will include Sugar Bowl's Jake Baker, Mark Engel, Nick Smith, Will Kanellos, Russell Lorang, James Clifford, Brent Talbott, Gabrielle Anthony, Simona Frank, Kristina Ress and Zoe Fiorio.
Best of luck to all our J1/J2's during the championships!
1/22/09 - The Front Page!
Many Sugar Bowl athletes participated in the first Western Region Junior Championship qualifier at Northstar on January 10-11. Due to low snow conditions the Super G's were cancelled but they had plenty of good snow on Pioneer to run a quality GS.
On the girls side, several Sugar Bowl athletes finished with top 10 results both days, including Gabrielle Anthony (3rd both days), Jaqueline Lebel (7th and 5th), Kristina Ress (5th and 8th) and Simona Frank (9th and 6th). Special mention goes to Haley Meyer returning from an injury. After a long absence she placed 18th and 20th so she must be starting to feel comfortable on those GS skis!
For the men, some of the team was out East and there were quite a few great college athletes providing strong competition, but there were some nice results for Maclane Brady (13th and 19th), Russell Lorang (23rd and 16th) and William Clifford as the top finishing birth year 1993 both days (18th and 24th).
Coming up some will travel to Montana for the FIS speed series while others continue to prepare for some home cooking on February 7th-8th when Sugar Bowl hosts the slalom qualfiers.
12/19/08 - Great Early Season Results
In case everyone hasn’t noticed we have finished the 1st semester, and have managed to get 40+ days on snow, with some great early season results. Mammoth has been the center of the competition since Jackson was cancelled. Throughout the FW and FIS races we have seen podium finishes by Gabby, Jacquie, Katie, Zoe, and Mark. We have had 2 race wins by Zoe and Gabby and a couple of single run wins by Mark and Simona Frank our newest edition to the womens team. Jake Scanell finished all 3 days of the FIS event in the top 5 and was our men’s MVP for the week. Although these are our highlights from the older athletes, most others like Corey, Brent, Mara, Will Clifford had highlights of their own moving up through the field and improving the ranking tremendously.
Our pre Christmas racing was topped by great news from Jake Baker up at the Canadian Nor Ams who scored Nor Am pts in SG and GS, and finished yesterday 22nd in the Men’s GS scoring a 34 FIS result and the FIRST tech Nor Am pts for Sugar Bowl in many years. CONGRATS TO JAKE!!!
Most of the team is on their way to Mammoth to race 2 GS races this weekend. We will have training available through the 23rd, and resuming again on the 27th through the 1st. The Holiday training block should be very successful and should set everyone up for a great January of WR Elits FIS, FW ENL races, Eastern Cups, and a few Nor Ams.
